Episode 22: Environmental Emergencies
On today’s show, I begin a discussion of environmental emergencies that are commonly enountered in the emergency department.
In the news segment, I discuss a few different topics. These include:
A news article from Medline Plus that finds (finally) that the obesity epidemic in the US is actually not from a sedintary lifestyle, but more from overeating! Go figure.
In more news, an article from NPR states that researchers are finding positive results with “hands only CPR”. I remember when this used to be a running joke……that people would say that would NEVER do mouth to mounth on someone they didn’t know, but they would do the compressions and hope for the best. Now, that may become an actual standard!
On the pharmaceutical front, I talk about two new medications that have been approved by the FDA. The first, “Exforge HCT”, is a combination blood pressure medication which is hoped to make it easier for hypertension patients to comply with therapy. It combine three popular medications into one pill allowing patients to take less pills per day. The second medication is for Type II diabetes and is very interesting. I thought it would be good to mention since we just covered diabetes in a recent podcast. Both of these articles appear on WebMD.
And finally, another article from WebMD states that researchers in Holland say that when confronted by challenging situation, walking backwards can increase you mental capacity to deal with it. Very interesting reading.
And finally, here’s the podcast…………….

Enjoy!!
